About the performance

The performance Where Was I uses the stage to research the development of dementia through two perspectives – personal and societal. It interprets the intimate world of an elderly woman who is slowly getting lost in her memories and becoming less aware of her present. The world around her gradually begins to fall into pieces which she reassembles into the new pictures of (her) reality. Her son is constantly with her, he helps, but she keeps drifting further away. Her understanding of the world is captured by interactive video scenography that  responds to the thoughts and movement of a mother with dementia. Her world is defined by her son and by the interactive staging with which she enters into a dialogue. The video projected onto the stage elements draws the image of her newly emerging world, reveals her memories and her attitude to the present. Based on actual events and an in-depth study of dementia, the creators have placed the story within a wider social context where the number of seniors is increasing. The performance develops an entire spectrum of emotions of an individual with dementia and offers one of the possibilities how the family might understand/experience it. It tells a story about the  relationship that remains and the memory that is departing.
