47th Week of Slovenian Drama

Playwriting workshop

Mentored by Simona Semenič

Playwriting workshops have an important place in the Week of Slovenian Drama, as encouraging and developing contemporary Slovenian drama creativity is one of the festival’s fundamental objectives. Since the very beginning of the workshops in 2004, renowned playwrights adhering to different poetics have been mentoring them. When choosing mentors, we’ve always placed importance on their quality, their teaching enthusiasm and their progressiveness. This year’s workshop will be led by Simona Semenič, whose creative beginnings were honed in this very context.

Simona Semenič is a three-time Grum Award winner for her plays 5boys.si (2009), 24hours (2010) and seven cooks, four soldiers and  three sophias (2015). Her play this apple, golden has been nominated for this year’s Grum Award. In the last two years she’s become the leading playwright in Slovenia. The previous and current season have witnessed eight stagings of her texts in Slovenia, four of them in  prominent Slovenian theatres.

Semenič has participated in playwriting workshops in the usa and has worked closely with the group WaxFactory. Since her debut she has written over twenty texts, was in charge of the Preglej initiative, within which she organised playwriting workshops, and the festival Preglej na glas!, which gave young playwrights the chance to present their work. Today she’s becoming more and more recognised also as a  playwriting mentor. The workshop is primarily aimed at students of dramaturgy, directing, acting and literature, professionals at the beginning of their theatre career, and beginners who would like to gain a basic knowledge of playwriting.

On Thursday, 6 April at 17.00, the participants of the playwriting workshop will present their work at a public event at the Škrlovec Tower.
